To me, one of the most important parts of Theta is its philanthropic arm, the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation. To see the impact of the Foundation in the lives of Thetas, look no further than the Friendship Fund and the Foundation's extensive scholarship and grant programs. The Friendship Fund is the epitome of Thetas helping Thetas. The Foundation has provided lifelines to our Theta sisters experiencing such dire circumstances as national disasters, devastating illnesses, or losses of income leaving mouths to feed and no where to turn. While the Friendship Fund is just one component, it is what drew me to the Foundation, and I am so happy to know that my "pennies", my contributions, will help ease the burden for Thetas trying to stay afloat amidst unthinkable hardships. Another integral part of the Foundation is its scholarship and grant progam for collegians, alumnae and the Fraternity. Earlier this year, the Foundation placed a Scholarship Reading and Scoring Committee in my home area of Westchester County, NY, and I was one of seven volunteers on the committee. We began reading scholarship applications in March ~ our committee was charged with reading and scoring 100 undergraduate applications for a variety of scholarships. Following Foundation guidelines, we read and scored the applications with three readers per application. Scholarship committees are placed throughout the country, and they play an important role in assisting the Foundation to select over 200 scholarship recipients every year. My work on this Foundation committee was more rewarding then I ever would have guessed, and I have already told our committee chair to sign me up for next year! I felt a connection to each of the young women whose applications I read, and it was a great way to feel even closer to the collegiate side of Theta, not just the alumnae side. If you ever have the opportunity to volunteer with the Foundation on a scholarship committee, as a Foundation Ambassador or in another capacity, I urge you to jump in, embrace the opportunity, and watch your Theta experience evolve yet again. So, what makes Theta important to me? What's my i-Factor? Simple. It's the bond of Theta sisterhood that enables me to reconnect with my pledge mom after losing touch for 18 years as well as to reach out to new Theta friends. And, it's the important work of the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation that ensures Thetas will ALWAYS be able to help Thetas.
