In 1977, a Seattle judge conceived the idea of using trained community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. So successful was this program that soon judges across the country began utilizing citizen advocates. Today, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) has grown to a network of more than 50,000 volunteers that serve 225,000 abused and neglected children through over 900 local program offices nationwide.
In 1989, Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity adopted National CASA, as its international philanthropy. Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation plays a critical role in this partnership. Through generous donations from members, the Foundation supports National CASA with a $30,000 annual grant that:
- the toll free CASA phone number
- educational materials and displays for volunteers
- volunteer retention training
- Kappa Alpha Theta Program Director of the Year program
To date, the Foundation has donated over $900,000 to CASA. Gifts from generous individuals, college chapters, and alumnae chapters enable the Foundation to support this worthwhile cause. If you wish to contribute to the National CASA grant, donate online now or send a check payable to Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation at 8740 Founders Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268-1300.
